For the Hearts Brains and Bodies of ME people was created and performed by Laura + Rufus as part of Maine Moves at Portland Ballet Studio Theater in April 2018.
This is part of a larger/longer low-tech live show involving one or more performers, one or more duffle bags, maybe some rope, flashlights, other not-dangerous oddments. We tend to improvise with what we’ve got.
In theory modern people are supposed to be frightened, unequivocally, of mysterious bags and boxes on the side of the road, on sidewalks, subway platforms, baggage terminals, elsewhere. And for good reason! There could be and often enough are, bombs or body parts in them and most of us don't want any part of that. It probably is best practice to stay far away from suspicious looking packages, as we've been repeatedly warned. But some, maybe most of us exist by choice or employment on kind a spectrum of interest in odd boxes and their possible contents: sand, cement, sacks of coffee, boxes of baitfish, contractor bags stuffed with disgusting, wet, sometimes fecal contents near to bursting. The only thing that is going to save us is the performance of many righteous secular labors in the name of ME, and many other peoples, in ME and many other places. We offer you this – our best current effort.
