      <image:title>IN TERNET HOLES</image:title>
<image:caption>The internet is like the ocean, full of holes.    The holes are under water. Which is itself under more water. And the holes are on top of the water too, float in it. Some people call boats holes in the water that you throw money into.        The internet is like the ocean, full of holes on, in, and under the water.      Holes you might throw money into.    Where does the money go that you throw into the internet?   Different places, at first, maybe, but then into pockets, which are a different kind of hole.   Whose pockets? My pockets? Your pockets? Their pockets? What is a pocket?       If you are wearing a dress, or a skirt, it might not have pockets.    Why is that?      If you have on a pair of pants with pockets, are they good pockets, useful? Would you like more pockets? What is a Hot Pocket? What is a Pocket Rocket? If the internet is a net, what kind of net. How finely woven.    Is it like a net you might use to catch butterflies? A net you might use to catch tadpoles? A net for a fishing boat? A gill-net? A fishnet stocking? What's that?   How many holes are in that kind of a net, whichever kind of net you imagine the internet to be.   I imagine the internet like a scrap of net, washed up on the beach, full of seaweed and shells and bits of driftwood, stinking.    Some threads of this net, my imagined internet, don't tie onto anything, just at loose ends at the edges, and even torn sometimes in the middle. If you were on a desert island and found that kind of a net, full of holes, you would be excited. It could be a very useful thing. I grew up on an island named after a desert, kind of, but that isn't how some people say it sometimes. You can say desert desert or dessert when talking about where I grew up. The internet could be a very useful thing, even still, even now, even full of holes. We could adapt it, like that scrap of fishnet, like a fishnet stocking, like a net for a purse-seiner, or a weir, to some other purpose.   Like a fence for a garden to grow things, to keep deer out. I have friends that do that, in New Brunswick, Canada. They use old fishnets of various kinds to keep deer out of their tomatoes and other vegetables. They also use the internet, in their houses.       In one of their houses, the internet comes through a cable, those people in New Brunswick, Canada, have not yet adapted to wireless technologies, or WIFI, even though their internet comes through a satellite dish. What a world we live in, with all kinds of nets.   I imagine the internet is just a scrap of a fish net, washed up on a beach, like a Jonah, like a whale, like Amos, like Boris.              Pretty junky net.    Still keep it around, have used it for things like holding hats, securing irregular loads in cargo-bays, trucks.    A cargo-bay. St. John's Bay. Hudson Bay. Boston Harbor. The East River.    The internet is not a fishnet. The internet is computers and servers and cables.    Hard-ware and hard-drives and soft-ware and the _____-people that made it. Clouds are in the sky, clouds are made of water vapor that sometimes condense, precipitate, rain back down.    Any scientist, even one who believes in any ghodi will tell you in no uncertain terms that this is called the hydrological cycle.    Evapotranspiration up from earth and plants and animals, precipitation down from clouds.    The internet, generally speaking, does not like the hydrological cycle very much.   Water and the internet do not get along very well. Hydro-phobic = water-fearing. Have you ever spilled a coffee or a sugarpoison on a computer and panicked? Then you know what I mean.      The internet is like the ocean, full of holes, full of security, full of fire, full of walls, full of mystery, full of depth, full of myth, full of history, full of stories.    Stories are like the ocean, full of holes, full of waves, full of feeling.        Here we are now together, in the ocean, in the internet, in the stories, full of feeling, full of holes.   A hair follicle is a kind of a hole with a thing stuck in it, a hair, until I or someone else plucks it, waxes it, or it falls out.    Is one kind of hole different from another kind of hole? What's in that hole? What's in that other hole A state legislator told me never to ask a question I didn't already know the answer to, like that was some kind of secret.    And a teacher told me once there was never any such thing as a stupid question, never be afraid to ask a question, a neutral, well-placed question is a powerful powerful tool, more powerful than any kind of gun or weapon.    I think we might be getting somewhere, between the state legislator and the teacher and these kinds of questions about the internet and oceans and pockets and holes. What other questions could we ask? If the internet is like an ocean and a net, is the ocean a net?      If the internet is in fact or in fiction like an ocean, which ocean, what kind of ocean?    I think the internet is like the black Atlantic. I think the internet is like the green and blue and brown and sometimes murky North Atlantic.    One kind of cable that is part of the internet is actually a bundle of cables called a fiber-optic cable that goes under the green and blue and brown and sometimes murky black North Atlantic ocean.    What is the black Atlantic? What was Middle Passage? What is Diaspora? Is Africa a country?     This is not a test, this is a test, Y/N?   Let's go back to neutral questions.    What is your name? How do you pronounce that? Is that what everyone calls you? Do people pronounce your name the way you pronounce your name?     My name is Rufus Morgan Kreilkamp Nicoll, or that is what I call myself, these days, on the internet in email.   I also call myself on the internet shttylttlshpvc.    Once upon a time when I and the internet was much much younger I called myself on the internet in email fistall@hotmail.com without a real idea of how fistall@hotmail.com might read to someone else on the internet. What might fistall@hotmail mean to someone on the internet then? Does it matter today, now that I am older?      The internet is like an ocean, full of holes.    For example:       Thank you.                                </image:caption>

<image:caption>Earlier this winter I was hanging out with a two year old and her father and some friends, we were watching hockey. The two year old asked me to read to her and proceeded to remix the books, like I want this section twice, then that one, then back to the first, in a really insistent kind of way. So it got me doing that kind of operation with other kinds of reading and writing. This is something in that vein with confused but searchable or known authorship. Treat it like an oral/aural script retranscribed, maybe:    I did enjoy dinner last night I don’t think so much the food (the salad was pretty tasty) but more the place and the waiters and the italian accents, yes a romantic sweepaway from whatever you know can do that to you, sort of flip you over and pretty soon you find yourself enjoying. Three dimensions.   It is seven o'clock and I re-examine an ex-speakeasy in East 53rd Street, with dinner in mind. A thin crowd, a summer-night buzz of fans interrupted by an occasional drink being shaken at the small bar. It is dark in here (the proprietor sees no reason for boosting his light bill just because liquor laws have changed). How dark, how pleasing; and how miraculously beautiful the murals showing Italian lake scenes––probably executed by the cousin of the owner.    There is a famous restaurant in Kyoto, the Waranjiya, one of the attractions of which was until recently that the dining rooms were lit by candlelight rather than electricity; but when I went there this spring after a long absence, the candles had been replaced by electric lamps in the style of old lanterns.   Teams of horses and oxen, I thought, must have hauled the stone in wagons from far countries, and then with infinite labour the grey blocks in whose shade I was now standing were poised in order one on top of another, and then the painters brought their glass for the windows, and the masons were busy for centuries up on that roof with putty and cement, spade and trowel. Every Saturday somebody must have poured gold and silver out of a leathern purse into their ancient fists, for they had their beer and skittles presumably of an evening.   Beowulf, Ecgtheow's son, replied: "Well, friend Unferth, you have had your say about Breca and me. But it was mostly beer that was doing the talking. The truth is   Everybody in the city has relations in the country and everybody in the country has relations in the city and everybody in the city expects to return to something in the country all the employees of the state all policemen all workmen of all sorts, in fact practically everybody even the shopkeepers do expect to retire eventually to the country, that is where inevitably you live when you no longer have to work for a living, when you have a pension when you have saved some thing and you grow vegetables and you build yourself a little house and you hope that money won't change so much but that you can live on what you have. Anyway you can always have some vegetables and rabbits and chickens and that is always something.</image:caption>

      <image:title>BIG SUGAR</image:title>
<image:caption>Governor Paul LePage is right on, sort of, kind of: It is high time for Maine people, American people everywhere to stand up to Big Sugar, but not as a thinly veiled attack on people who need food-stamps. Big Sugar has been poisoning our children for far too long and that has got to stop. As the USDA and other opponents of Governor LePage's anti-Big Sugar initiative know, it can be hard to quantify the public health impact of sugary beverages and junk food items on everyday citizens. For example, Big Sugar operates alongside Big Tobacco and Big Pharma and Big DOW/JONES and Big FacebookAmazonGoogle to create one heck of a physio-psycho-chemico-digito-alphabet-soup we all swim around in daily. Big Sugar nasty, Big Sugar ugly, Big Sugar killing ME and US. It isn't just the present-day intake: Big Sugar is for many Americans a daily reminder of our nation's brutal legacies of chattle slavery, Middle Passage, and the Triangle Trade, just like a favorite old supersoftened t-shirt may recall King Cotton and his many haunted house factories, the plantations of the North American South, or the textile mills of the North American North. But I think Governor LePage should stop begging current President Donald Trump for favors on the matter of further regulating food stamp purchases until he can first get Big Sugar out of the State House in Augusta. Let me explain:   Earlier this month I visited the famous Bulfinch State House by the Kennebec and was surprised to find Big Sugar alive and well in our solemn palace of law. There reared Big Sugar, first before the morning legislative session in the form of myriad pastry––muffins, scones, danish, Big Sugar dusted donuts––spread out on a table like other lobbyists had pamphlets and give-away buttons. Then later, at a lunch-hour presentation on Early Childhood Education for the multipartisan Children's Caucus, Big Sugar again lolled its serpentine head. There at the Children's Caucus luncheon, legislators who just last year debated measures to tax sugary beverages and junk food enjoyed sandwiches, small packages of potato chips, over-sweet cookies, and a variety of bottled Coca-Cola products averaging somewhere on the order of a billion empty-sugar calories per dose. To say nothing of the single-use plastic! I confess, I don't know how those food items of dubious nutrition made their way into the State House, but I suspect a committee or two approved a vendor contract or two, and tax-payer monies were spent. Are being spent today. If that is in fact the case, I want a refund. If budget cuts are to be made, let's start there, however small the line-item. By any means necessary, let's stand up to Big Sugar as a vote for the future of ME and US. Just as King Cotton was brought down, so too will Big Sugar be winnowed. But doing that will mean everyone doing their fair share, not just people who use food-stamps to get by. Hypocrisy in Augusta or Washington or any capitol building anywhere is a matter of right and wrong. It is dead right to fight Big Sugar, and it is dead wrong for anyone, elected official or otherwise, to wield the chastening rod with one hand while biting a mega-muffin-top held in the other.
